Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
