The speculation around the recent awards show was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team might be designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve with a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be approached in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a inventive way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
